Volclay® (sodium) western bentonite is the most popular binder in green sand molding. It is accepted by the foundry industry as its standard. Volclay provides quality castings with low casting losses, excellent finish, and good dimensional reproducibility at the lowest possible cost. Volclay benefits include versatility and ease of-control, increases dry strength of molding sand, has excellent hot strength, high durability, facilitates deep-draws and development of sharp, strong mold edges.
Panther Creek® is a consistent, high quality, non-swelling (calcium) southern bentonite. At equal levels of additions, moisture and mulling, Panther Creek provides greater green compression strength than western bentonite, fireclay or other clay minerals. Additional benefits of Panther Creek include excellent shakeout, good rammability, excellent flowability, low dry and hot compression strength.
Additrol® is a custom additive blend of western and/or southern bentonites which can also include a variety of carbonaceous products, cereals, iron oxides and starches. Additrol is blended to meet the needs of both ferrous and non-ferrous applications.
Seacoal is the traditional carbonaceous additive for green sand molding. Only consistent, high quality metallurgical grades of bituminous coal are used as American Colloid Seacoal.
Cellflo® is a cellulose product made from select kiln-dried hardwood and ground to meet metalcasting needs. Cellflo has the ability to absorb and hold water. Sand mixtures containing Cellflo do not dry out as rapidly, therefore, brittle and lumpy mixtures are minimized and collapsibility is improved at shakeout.
Cereal – is produced from corn by a dry-milling process. It reduces expansion type casting defects such as scabs, buckles, rattails and veins. Cereal burns out rapidly, minimizing hot tears and cracks. The chief limitations related to the use of cereal generally arise from excessive amounts in the sand. Some of the problems resulting from this limitation are; high moisture requirements, reduced flowability, gas related defects, burn-on, burn-in and metal penetration.
Flo-Carb® is a naturally occurring, high quality organic material specially processed to improve the properties of green sand systems bonded with western bentonite. It can be added to green sand systems by introducing it into Additrol blends. Among the outstanding features of Flo-Carb are improved green compression strengths, increased system sand flowability, and better shake-out.
SPECIALTY SANDS
Cast-rite® is synthesized, non-silica foundry sand consisting of calcined carbon. Carbon sand is a round grain, non-porous sand used for making molds and cores. It has low thermal expansion to help combat veining. Cast-rite has high conductivity; it will not thermally shock and has no sintering point.
Hevi-Sand® is a versatile Chromite Spinal designed for traditionally difficult Metalcasting applications. Its density provides molds and cores a high rate of heat transfer and excellent chilling characteristics – often eliminating the need for fabricated or cast chills. Its outstanding application is to reduce metal penetration. Other features of Hevi-Sand include low thermal expansion, low binder requirements, and significant reduction of overall cleaning costs.
IRON FLUXES
GFN-1 Flux – is a specialty ladle flux used for slag and inclusion control in gray and ductile iron.
SCF-1 – is a specially formulated cleansing agent recommended for use in cupola melting operations. It is designed to be added during cupola start-up and cupola melt-out where increased fluidity is needed in the slag to remove the ash generated from the coke.
BRICK AND BRIQUETTED FERROALLOYS
Carsil Brick/Briquette – is a high performance ferroalloy based product designed to enhance silicon and carbon recoveries in cupola melting operations. This product takes advantage of the lower melting temperature of ferrosilicon, while providing the carbon contribution afforded through silicon carbide additions. The silicon and carbon content of the Carsil products can be adjusted to meet the requirements of specific iron chemistries in cupola operations.
Ferrosilicon Brick/Briquette – Ferroalloy is used to adjust silicon levels to target values.
Ferromanganese Brick/Briquette – Ferroalloy is used to adjust manganese to target values.
Silicon Carbide Brick/Briquettes – Available in a variety of grades from 20% to 80% silicon carbide. this product provides the user with both silicon and carbon units for the adjustment of these elements to target value.
NON-FERROUS MELT TREATMENT
Reeli-Klean® - is a line of multiple purpose melting preparations for aluminum, copper and zinc alloys. Each has exceptional properties for cleansing and removing impurities from molten non-ferrous alloys. Consistent use of Reeli-Klean promotes improved casting quality. Friendly to both foundry personnel and to the environment, Reeli-Klean melt preparations minimize smoke, annoying odor and emissions. These products reduce metal loss by promoting through separation of metal and oxides in dross.
