Ceramics, Porcelain and Glaze Applications
Ceramics, Porcelain and Glaze Applications of Bentonite

CERAMICS. . . as a plasticizer
Small portions of hectorite clays are used to supplement other clays, which will create considerable improvement in the properties of ceramic bodies. The extremely large surface area of hectorite - - as much as twenty to forty times as much as other colloidal clay substances, allows for a much greater number of contact points between the larger grains of the aggregate and impart better mobility or higher bond strength to the mass. Hectorites are non-migratory binders that impart uniformity in ceramic bodies and fire to a white finish.

PORCELAIN AND GLAZES . . . as a suspension agent
The excellent suspending and plasticizing properties of hectorite, together with its ability to fire white, is an excellent alternative to the customary clay additives in enamel formulations. The high suspending power eliminated fish scaling due to lack of suspension and gives greater film strength to the enamel.

Products

  • Bentobrite® 770
Suspending agent and gellant for use in household products, automotive products, aerosols, paints, enamels and other industrial applications. Used as a binder and plasticizer, especially in ceramic bodies, to ease extrusion and increase green strength.
  • Hectabrite® DP
Produces high viscosities and high gel strengths at low solids levels. Exhibits a high degree of shear thinning. Used as a binder and plasticizer, especially in ceramic bodies, to ease extrusion and increase green strength. Used in paints, ceramic glazes, and in other applications where a high degree of anti-settling and anti-sag are required.
  • Hectalite® 200
High-yielding hectorite clay that exhibits high efficiency, excellent rheology and stability. Typically used in dishwasher liquids, cementitious products, cleaners, architectural paints, ceramics, and adhesives.
  • Hectalite® GM
Used as a binder and plasticizer, especially in ceramic bodies, to ease extrusion and increase green strength with minimal viscosity increase.
  • Magnabrite® T
Used whenever an inorganic, thixotropic material is desired to disperse pigments, retard settling, impart body or stabilize emulsions. Magnabrite T is a nonmigrating binder which delivers high yield values that enable the successful suspension of high-density pigments and particles.
  • Polargel® CA
Applications where high solid levels and low viscosity are desired. Used as a binder and plasticizer to ease extrusion and increase green strength with minimal viscosity increase.
  • Volclay® 325 Mesh
Multi-purpose suspending, emulsifying, and binding agent used in industrial applications where low grit and a small, dry particle size are required.
  • Volclay® SPV 200
Multi-purpose suspending, emulsifying, and binding agent used in industrial products where a dry 200 mesh particle size is required.
